Camelot's Destiny

I'm reading a book right now called "Camelot's Destiny" by Cynthia Breeding. It tells the story of Camelot. Of how Arthur finds his place as high king and his most trusted warrior and closest friend Lancelot finds himself caught between a loyalty to king and country and to himself. Of Gwenhwyfar and her journey to become the queen, wife and lover, Goddess of the land. Of her struggle when she finds herself in love with two men. Her vows are to her king and country, but her passion belongs to Lancelot, her foretold destiny. It's a fantastic book that blends the myths and magic of the Arthurian legends with romance, while still reading like a fascinating history book. But thats not the point of this particular rant...

Gwen has two men whom she loves. Arthur is her husband, and her king and Lancelot is her champion and her lover. Both love her, both would do anything for her. She is honor bound to remain with Arthur while her heart, in truth, remains with Lance. How awful. I've always thought back to these legends. The tale is much like Tristan and Isolde (Who actually appear in this book..) Fated, destined to be together. Their whole lives are spent dreaming of a single moment in their past, and when reconciled in their future it's too late. Was Gwen wrong? When she went to Lancelot, betraying her King, and her religion, was she wrong? We hear about the concept of soul mates, the one perfect person, your other half, your strong hold, the place where your soul can find rest. Gwen marries Arthur. She willingly make the choice that the fantasy man from her past cannot mean more to her than protecting her people. She is unsure of Arthur, but knows that he will treat her well, and together they are happy. He is a good man, he treats her well, both as a person and as a woman. Immediately after she discovers Lancelot. Her champion, her knight, her defender, the man who awakens in her passion but still makes her feel safe. With him she is always at ease, they can talk for hours, or be silent and still know the others heart, something she does not feel with her husband. So is she wrong?
